Adobe CS5.5

Untypically close to the release of Adobe CS5 (in April 2010), Adobe just opened the registers for sales of CS5.5! This new (and first ever) “mid cycle release” comes tricked out with some pretty sweet new features. At the top of the list are improvements to HTML5 and Flash authoring features, video production and editing innovations, and its digital publishing capabilities. Adobe also is very excited about offering developers a SDK for creating applications that integrate directly into PhotoShop. Pretty neat, and goodness knows that this means that there will be more apps in the tablet market…

Adobe has clearly decided to change thier release pattern. They used to release (a “milestone release”) every 24 months or so, but now they plan to possibly extend that period and add in this new mid cycle release. I am not 100% sure that it makes sense to upgrade every cycle, especially since there are going to be more releases and the prices are not getting any cheaper… One thing that is pretty awesome about the new release is that Adobe is now offering subscription licensing, in addition to the traditional license purchasing. Not too shabby!

For the designers/developers, the most amazing developments are undoubtedly those in DreamWeaver. The new DW has greatly increased support for HTML5 and CSS3. In particular are the code hints! Not only does it help with the CSS3, but also the browser specific CSS3, which is awesome :-P For a more in-depth overview, check out this video released by Adobe about CS5.5 Web Premium.
