Miss out on that .com name that you always wanted. Now there is similar but shorter option to consider, .co. Formerly limited to Colombian websites, ICANN in conjunction with the .CO Internet S.A.S. released access to the .co suffix to the general public on July 20, 2010. Purchase of these domains is significantly limited to a handful of hosting companies including GoDaddy.com, Register.com and Network Solutions.
Sure this is still not as sweet as having the .com ending, but a huge advantage is that the .co ending is already widely used by dozens of countries and is already integrated into many web URLs in the form of Third-Level Domain Registration (mysite.co.uk). I don’t know that I will be jumping overboard or suggesting that clients buy a .co website as the primary URL, but .co is just a slight typo away from .com… It might at least be worth having to be safe. Just some more food for thought…
